Bike Safety in Wythall: Irresponsible Cyclists or Dangerous Roads?

Recently there has been an increase of individuals riding around the local area on bicycles causing disruption on the roads.

A few times this week I've been driving and had to stop because a young person was cycling in the middle of the road without a helmet.

This is undoubtedly dangerous for both the cyclists and drivers. While the roads in Wythall aren't full of traffic it's still not safe to ride in the middle of the roads.

However it is illegal for anybody to ride a bicycle on the pavement (the law also applies to children , but as those under 10 are below the age of criminal responsibility they can't be prosecuted) which begs the question where are they meant to ride?

The road side and most of the pavement is taken up by parked cars at school time so students cycling home from school have no choice but to use the road.

What do you think? Should we have a dedicated cycle lane to make it safer for kids? Or should we have a part of the park where they can do tricks like wheelies to keep them safe? Let us know in the comments below!
